Coverage optimisation based on received power and antenna location in a distributed antenna system

Using only measurements, an optimum solution for providing indoor coverage using distributed antennas is proposed, minimising cost, complexity and development time, as well as increasing reliability and system performance. A new technique based on distributed antennas using customised low-power in-building transmitters is proposed, where coverage area is delimited and controlled by individual antenna units. A binary search algorithm is employed to find the optimum distributed antenna solution, and is fully described in the paper. The paper shows examples of the differing optimal solutions produced as a result of each of these constraints, and draws conclusions as to how best to measure, design and implement optimal distributed antenna coverage solutions. Further work and investigations are also discussed, where alternative algorithms for coverage optimisation are proposed. © 2004 IEEE.
