Abstract

  • The recycling of electronic products is an important alternative in terms of reducing the accumulation of e-waste, but it requires the support of the community to be successful. The aim of this study was to identify the profile and motivations of individuals who participated in a pioneering e-waste recycling event carried out in the metropolitan area of the capital of the State of Mexico -a state located in the centre of the country, around Mexico City-. The information gathered from a survey of 177 of the 202 participants established that their level of education, their general concern about environmental problems and their engagement in pro-environmental behaviours are higher than among non-participants. As for their motivations, it was concluded that the influence of friends and family, a strong sense of commitment to the community and the availability of permanent sites for the collection of electronic waste close to their home all significantly affect recycling behaviour. © 2012 by Fundación Infancia y Aprendizaje.
