López-Zavala, Miguel Ángel

Overview

Miguel Angel LOPEZ received the B.S. degree in Irrigation Engineering from the Universidad Autónoma Chapingo in 1992 and the M.S. degree and Ph Degree in the field of Urban and Environmental Engineering both from Hokkaido University, Japan, in 2001 and 2004, respectively. He was researcher at the Japan Science and Technology Agency from 2004 to 2005. He is member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences since 2016 and member and evaluator of the national research system of the National Council of Science and Technology, México (CONACYT) since 2006. Prof. López Zavala worked for the Ministry of Agriculture, Mexico, from 1991 to 1989, leading the Agricultural Engineering Coordination at the state of San Luis Potosí and the departments of Irrigation Engineering and Technology Transfer at the Headquarters. He is active member of the International Water Association (IWA) and American Water Works Association (AWWA). Treasurer of la IWA-Mexico from 2010 - 2011. Author of 10 book chapters, more than 75 scientific papers published in international journals and proceedings of international conferences and congresses. Speaker and invited speaker in more than 80 international congresses. Inventor of 5 patents granted in Mexico, 1 in the USA, 1 in Brazil and 1 in India. He has established collaboration agreements with Hokkaido University and Hitachi Corporation Japan on students and faculty exchange and joined research, respectively. Research leadership of Prof. López Zavala has been awarded with the Quetzalcoatl Medal 2018 by the Environmental Science and Technology College, the Rómulo Garza Prize for Research on Science, Technology and Engineering in 2009 by the Tecnológico de Monterrey. His current research interests are: a) Production of bio-electricity and bio-hydrogen from the wastewater treatment processes and sludge digestion; b) Degradation of emergent contaminants by electrochemical oxidation processes and heterogeneous photo-catalysis using TiO2 nanotubes; c) Use of bio-additives (fungi) to improve the sedimentation and dehydration of activated sludge in wastewater treatment plants; d) Development of ceramic-type membranes made of clay-perlite-iron to remove heavy metals from water; e) Sanitation value chain.
