abstract
Background: DM2 is a highly prevalent chronic disease. Objective: Evaluate the quality of the medical care provided to patients with DM2 in the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Medicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubiran, Mexico, based on the goals established by the Diabetes Recognition Program, and identify risk factors for poor glycemic control. Establish a cohort of patients with DM2 for follow-up. Material and methods: This is a descriptive, observational, and retrospective study. We analyzed 708 medical charts. Results: According to the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) parameters, our center obtained the score to be accredited as a center of excellence in the care of patients with DM2 (81/100 points). Patients with poor glycemic control (HbA1c ¿ 7 %) were younger (62.97 vs 66.06 years, p= 0.0016), their DM2 had been present for a longer period (13.40 vs 9.57 years, p= 0.0001), and vitamin D levels were lower (20.49 vs 22.39 ng/ml, p= 0.0021). Conclusions: The Internal Medicine Department provides high-quality medical care, and fulfills international standards; how-ever, poor DM2 control, overweight, and obesity are still highly prevalent. © 2024 Academia Nacional de Medicina de México, A.C.
