abstract

  • The COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) methodology has proven effective in developing intercultural skills as well as supporting the understanding of global issues and preparing students to face the challenges of a globalized world. The study of complex phenomena such as migration is enriched when analyzed with a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach that combines quantitative and qualitative data. In this educational innovation we report the description of a COIL activity where migration is analyzed. The implementation was carried out between three universities, from two continents and different university studies. The students worked on the complex phenomenon of migration from quantitative perspectives, using descriptive statistics, qualitative, with interviews with migrants and businesspeople, interviewing entrepreneurs or reviewing SDG 8 and 10 reports in companies. The analysis of the results allows us to affirm that the three activities helped to understand the migration phenomenon. The qualitative activity had more impact, it was chosen as the most relevant and moderately difficult to conduct. The quantitative activity was considered the most difficult to carry out, but the second most relevant; the business activity was defined as the easiest to carry out and moderately relevant. © 2025 IEEE.
