abstract
- Since 2020, a disease syndrome on watermelon plants has been observed in Jalisco, Mexico. Diseased plants were severely stunted, and leaves showed chlorotic mottling and yellowing. In 10 watermelon fields, disease incidence ranged from 40 to 70%. Cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus (CYSDV; Crinivirus cucurbitae) and watermelon chlorotic stunt virus (WmCSV; Begomovirus citrulli) were detected by high-throughput sequencing. Viral associations in plant samples were confirmed using specific PCR primers for both plant viruses. This is the first report of CYSDV and WmCSV in a natural mixed infection in watermelon in Mexico. © 2025 The American Phytopathological Society.
