Community Based Cyber-Physical Systems for Urban Waste Management: A Socio-Technical Innovation Model in the Fenicia Urban Living Lab
Academic Article in Scopus
This manuscript presents an urban experiment on waste management developed under the Technological Innovation Management Model of the Urban Living Lab (ULL) in Fenicia, Bogotá. The model enables the co-creation of socio-technical solutions by integrating community participation, digital technologies, and iterative experimentation to address urban challenges. In this case, the experiment focuses on the detection and simulation of street waste through a cyber-physical system (CPS) that leverages artificial intelligence (AI), digital twins, and citizen sensing. Community members use drones and smart-phones to capture georeferenced images of waste, particularly plastic bottles, discarded in public spaces. These images are uploaded to a digital twin platform where a custom-trained AI model identifies and classifies the waste. The digital twin then simulates spatial accumulation patterns and critical dumping points, providing actionable insights for decision-making and urban intervention. This paper shows an IA-driven recognition, proposing a scalable to a real-time simulation, of a model on socio-technical innovation. The results contribute to building a replicable model for smart waste management in developing countries.
