abstract

  • To provide students with support throughout their academic careers, higher education institutions frequently implement a variety of initiatives, including mentoring programs. These programs are designed to assist students in establishing and attaining personal and professional objectives by providing a range of activities focused on cultivating professional competencies. Adequate professional mentoring is crucial for student success, especially for low-performing students. It helps them understand their interests and abilities to make informed decisions. An effective support and mentoring model are essential, incorporating personalized advising and other resources to help students achieve their graduation goals. The objective of this research is to analyze the impact of specialized mentoring on the academic performance of underperforming engineering students. The study will evaluate the efficacy of mentoring strategies and the graduation rates of students receiving mentorship. From 2019 to 2024, 835 students from the Tecnologico de Monterrey School of Engineering with low academic performance participated in the academic mentoring program. 722 students successfully completed the program, resulting in an 86 % success rate. These findings indicate a positive correlation between the mentoring program and successful completion of engineering studies. The high graduation rate indicates that academic mentoring may play a pivotal role in enhancing student performance and promoting retention in these programs.
