Immersive Learning in Mathematics: Student Perceptions on the Use of Virtual Reality in the Classroom Academic Article in Scopus uri icon

abstract

  • The design of an activity based on the constructivist approach is described, using the GeoGebra Mixed Reality virtual reality (VR) tool. The specialized literature indicates that VR stands out for generating immersive and interactive experiences for students, improving their understanding of disciplinary concepts by interacting with abstract objects and ideas in a three-dimensional environment. The activity was implemented in a multivariable calculus course with 75 university students in Mexico. The guiding question of this research is: What is the impact of using virtual reality in multivariable calculus classes from the students' perspective? The results show that students recognized that VR helped them better understand and reinforce the topics covered in class. The design of the activity under a constructivist approach proved to be an effective strategy, as it encourages the development of spatial reasoning and creative thinking.
