In the same way, the new generations of professionals have skills and access to information that allow them to exploit their capacities and harness their knowledge. Therefore, the design and development of different life cycle entities are paramount by using reference models that integrate toolboxes, engineering activities, and methodologies that provide structure during design and development tasks. In this work, the Sensing, Smart and Sustainable process reference framework is presented (S3), which allows the development of manufacturing processes; it is particularised in one of its applications, the selection of solutions for redesigning a manufacturing process. The case study of a leak test in the automotive sector has been selected. The study results provide a structure for development teams to increase manufacturing processes' automation and align the manufacturing firm's sustainable objectives.
