abstract

  • On 20 February 1950, José Gallostra y Coello de Portugal, the unofficial representative of Franco¿s Spain in Mexico was assassinated in broad daylight in Mexico City by Gabriel Salvador Fleitas Rouco, an exiled anarchist of Spanish origin. In the light of an event that shocked public opinion in both countries, this article draws on primary sources to analyse the reaction to the crime in Franco¿s Spain, focusing on two settings of the action: the site of Spanish representation in Mexico, located at 77, Avenida Paseo de la Reforma in the Mexican capital, and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the Palacio de Santa Cruz in Madrid. As we will see, the Franco regime sought to have the Mexican exequatur granted as a preliminary legal step to achieving the desired normalization of relations with Mexico. © 2023 CSIC Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas.
