In this paper a novel concept for a modular battery electric vehicle (BEV) is proposed, called low voltage reconfigurable electric vehicle (LVREV). Designed to bridge the gap between L and M class vehicles, the LVREV incorporates a 60 V multi-phase powertrain with a swappable battery pack. This setup enables variable range capabilities, optimal energy consumption in urban settings, and superior safety standards. Notably, the LVREV offers two operational modes: the Frugal mode optimizes urban driving with a smaller battery for increased efficiency and reduced weight, while the Dual mode supports longer extra-urban journeys by utilizing a dual battery system. Key innovations of the LVREV concept include: reconfigurable vehicle architecture, which adapts to both urban and extra-urban requirements, offering a versatile transportation solution; a low-voltage powertrain that enhances safety and reduces costs, suitable for manual battery swaps and compatible with home charging systems; and a multi-phase electric motor with a dual inverter that reduces the current rating per phase, ensuring reliability through operational redundancy. By integrating these technological advancements, the LVREV redefines the possibilities of low-voltage electric vehicles, promoting a shift towards more adaptable, efficient, and user-oriented automotive solutions. © 2024 IEEE.
