abstract

  • This book explores how to integrate systems perspective in services. We recognise that there are several systems theories that different service design perspectives can apply in their practice when handling complexities. Combining the services and systems is what Buchanan¿s theoretical framework would call coupling third-and fourth-order design together. The analysis suggests that diverse service challenges require pluralistic approaches, reflecting the critical needs for multiple paradigms, methodologies and methods. This book also discusses the importance of co-creation and participatory design in systemic service design and service designers¿ role in addressing wicked problems. Through its chapters, this book indicates an emerging paradigm in service design, advocating for more research and collaboration between the fields of systems and service design. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Mari Suoheimo, Peter Jones, Sheng-Hung Lee and Birger Sevaldson; individual chapters, the contributors.
