Puente de la Historia, San Juan del Río, Mexico: From colonial bridge to heritage park Book in Scopus uri icon

abstract

  • The Puente de la Historia (also known as the Stone Bridge) in San Juan del Río, Querétaro, Mexico, is a historic masonry bridge built in the early 18th century (1710¿1711) under the orders of the viceroy and architect Pedro de Arrieta. Located on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (CRTA), it served as a vital crossing point over the San Juan River for caravans, mule trains, and trade traffic. Despite its cultural significance and heritage designation, there is limited publicly available technical documentation (original construction drawings, detailed structural plans), and the bridge has undergone interventions to accommodate pedestrian use while preserving its historical character. This paper presents a preliminary archival and visual documentation study, proposes a framework for structural assessment, and outlines a conservation intervention plan. The framework integrates archival research, condition survey, material testing, hydrological risk evaluation, and numerical structural modeling. The goal is to provide a basis for heritage-informed interventions that ensure safety, reliability, and preservation of authenticity.
