abstract

  • © 2020 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.Agaves have a dominant social, economic, and medicinal history in Mexico. In the Mexican landscape, the most important plants are the agaves or maguey. The natural geographical distribution of these plants is on arid and semiarid regions. These plants are considered as key species in those regions due to the abundance and the innumerable amount of resources they provide to other organisms. Agave has been used in traditional medicine as an anesthetic, anticonvulsant, antipyretic, urinary antiseptic, cathartic, cicatricial, and regenerative, diuretic, emmenagogue and eupeptic. Agave extracts and derived agave products have been used to prevent several metabolic diseases, such as diabetes and cancer. However, more studies are needed to support these effects.
