AI in Music: Implications and Consequences of Technology Supporting Creativity Book in Scopus uri icon

abstract

  • Artificial intelligence (AI) has become ubiquitous in many creative fields, including music. From composition to mastering, AI has been implemented to deliver results in different stages of production and can be categorized by its algorithmic nature or effectiveness to solve an intended problem. The advances in this field are as diverse as the electronic means applied to the creation of music or AI and its possibilities; this variety allows for new approaches not only to what it means to produce new material but also to analyze and better understand music from the past. This chapter aims to provide a starting point to venture into creative problems related to music composition from the perspective of knowledge representation and reasoning and machine learning as fields of AI, including diverse considerations surrounding their uses in the music-making process. To exemplify the contributions of AI in music, we present one of the most famous cases of an unfinished composition, Puccini¿s Turandot. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Manuel Cebral-Loureda, Elvira G.
