During the COVID-19 pandemic, social media was crucial for social interaction. This event disrupted work practices and places, highlighting the dominance of flexible schemes for working from home and the increased use of technology and digital communication tools. This chapter exposes that although remote, online, and home-based working modes became the only option for many organizations and employees, digital tools considered mainly for social interaction did not increase productivity. This study surveyed to explore this phenomenon and evaluate the effects of digital tools, both formal and informal, on engagement and productivity. The results show that informal communication tools, such as messaging and social media, are more significant in keeping people connected and engaging with their organizational responsibilities than supporting better performance. In contrast, formal communication tools, such as email and technological platforms, were critical to increasing productivity. These results do not state that social media is irrelevant for organizations; moreover, being a new and popular communication tool, increasing people's engagement makes it critical to understand how and when to use it for organizational purposes. © 2024 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
