Community-Centered Engineering: A Participatory Approach to Addressing Water Management in Complex Sociotechnical Systems Chapter in Scopus uri icon

abstract

  • This research explores the integration of participatory action research (PAR) within the context of complex sociotechnical systems, specifically addressing water management challenges in rural Colombia. Through the case study of Teorama, Norte de Santander, in collaboration with Ingenieros Sin Fronteras Colombia and local institutions, we analyse how engineering practices can engage communities in co-designing solutions for improving water quality. The project utilized PAR to actively involve the community in identifying challenges and implementing sustainable solutions. The implementation of a methodological context that complements PAR is proposed: The Social Innovative Route. By employing a collaborative framework, the study highlights the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to solving sociotechnical problems that combine technical expertise with local knowledge. The project resulted in 'Teoralimpiadas,' a gamified initiative designed to raise awareness about water sustainability and pollution management in the community. This initiative not only addressed immediate environmental concerns but also fostered long-Term community engagement and ownership of the solutions. Our findings emphasize the significance of integrating social, environmental, and technical dimensions when addressing the complexity of sociotechnical systems in vulnerable areas. By offering recommendations for replicating this model in other contexts, this Project stress the need for adaptable, community-centred engineering practices that can bridge gaps between technical solutions and the realities of local contexts. This research draw attention to the vital role of transdisciplinary collaboration in tackling global challenges like water scarcity, environmental degradation, and community resilience.
