BL-CL is produced through enzymatic reaction via the conversion of chemical energy into light inside a living organism without the need for an excitation source. In a normal BL-CL reaction, luciferase catalyzes the oxidation of the substrate. Expectedly, the combination of BL-CL with bio-microelectromechanical systems (BioMEMS) would grant a compact, sensitive, and portable device that operates on very small sample volumes. This chapter provides a thorough review of the latest advancements of BioMEMS that operate based on the principle of BL-CL detection. A detailed comparison between the fabrication and operation of these devices along with the advantages and disadvantages of each technique are also included in this chapter.
