© 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.This research explores the challenges that urban architectural design is going to face in the coming decades in vulnerable communities. Since the concept of vulnerability cannot be analyzed detached from the context of reference, the research project has taken the colony Paso del Norte in the city of Chihuahua (Mexico) as its object of study. Based on the methodology of Research by Design, the authors organized a design workshop carried out by designers and residents of the vulnerable community, supported by experts from different scientific disciplines, who expanded the vision on the subject of vulnerability in the coming decades. The research was based on the study of (1) project proposals elaborated in the workshop and (2) discussions that emerged from the round tables with the experts. The analysis of both sources highlighted the importance of some transversal themes (education, community, ecology, production, etc.) and some design thematic areas (landscape, construction tradition, urban integration, infrastructure, etc.). In particular, the fundamental importance of promoting processes to bring the community taking the ownership of the regenerative process and the responsibility for its own future was stressed.
