abstract
- A Designation of Origin (DO) is a special type of geographical indication (GI) These tools have been adopted in Latin American countries, such is the case of our country, as of today Mexico has eighteen approved D.O.'s and 174 Collective Trademark registrations (IMPI, 2019). Among the most important are the denomination of origin Tequila (DOT) and the denomination of origin Mezcal (DOM). The objective of this work is to analyze in a comparative the governance and the institutional framework of two Mexican GI, Tequila and Mezcal. To this end, the Global Value Chains methodology is used from its first approach. The analysis is carried out under a mixed approach with information from official statistical databases, documentary sources, and fieldwork in regions of the protected territory. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.
