Analyzing Research Data on Global Humanitarian Technology for Sustainable Development: A Bibliometrics Review Academic Article in Scopus uri icon

abstract

  • Humanitarian technologies (HTs) are increasingly recognized as enablers of sustainable development, yet their global research trajectories remain fragmented. Using a PRISMA-guided systematic review of n=431 peer-reviewed publications from 2015 to 2024, sourced from Scopus, the study applied trend analysis, concept mapping, and thematic synthesis of the collected data using data visualization and analytical tools such as VOSviewer, Tableau, and R software. It contributes by mapping knowledge gaps, regional disparities, and potential pathways for HT to strengthen sustainable computing and communications research. The results reveal growing scholarly interest, particularly post-2020, influenced by COVID-19, coinciding with the UN's sustainable development goals (SDGs) and agenda since adopting the SDGs in 2015. Key findings reveal that humanity-based technologies, e.g., AI, blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), and renewable energy and solar grid are vital to addressing the persistent world challenges, offering scalable solutions in healthcare, education, disaster management, energy, and environmental sustainability. However, disparities persist in access and implementation of HT, with innovations plausible in high-income nations over low-and middle-income regions. In turn, this paper encourages equitable infrastructure investment and structural development, effective policy design and implementation, and quality education to ensure HTs contribute meaningfully to an inclusive, just, and sustainable society and human development and aid worldwide.
