A Practical Approach to Experiential Learning: Building Wheelchairs in the Context of Industrial Engineering Education Academic Article in Scopus uri icon

abstract

  • This paper argues that although engineering education is dominated by emerging technologies, teaching and learning theories previously proposed could still be a driving force for learning facilitation. This paper explores the actual role of the Experiential Learning Theory in the context of engineering education in a Mexican University. The paper describes how a wheelchair design and construction project was implemented with first year engineering students. It suggests that concepts such as empathy, group work and emphasis on real-world user needs' could be adequately incorporated to the Experiential Learning Theory in order to design more engaging and significant learning experiences to engineering education.
