This paper presents a case study on the systematic application of a design methodology for the development of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Integrated Function Modelling (IFM) is employed to structure the design of SKILIKET (from Latin sc¿licet, meaning ¿it becomes evident¿), an educational environmental monitoring platform focused on promoting citizen science, sustainability, and environmental awareness. Based on identified user needs, a use case is developed to define the system¿s functional and operational requirements. This use case is translated into a process view, organizing processes to clearly delineate system boundaries and functional specifications. IFM is further applied to analyse the system from general to specific functions, identifying operands, their states, and key interactions. Three essential design layers¿electronic hardware, cloud storage, and web application¿are addressed through IFM to guide the concept development process within the case study. The actor view is then utilized for system decomposition, distinguishing between custom-built components and commercially available modules for integration. These elements are assembled into an experimental prototype that demonstrates the system¿s functionality as a proof of concept. The study highlights the integration of digital prototyping, computer-aided design, and IFM to enable the systematic design of IoT devices that empower communities to engage in citizen science initiatives. Ultimately, this work aims to establish an initial framework for systematic design modelling of IoT-based educational tools that foster innovative learning, participatory environmental monitoring, and community-driven sustainability efforts through enhanced environmental awareness.
