It is studied together with random variables, where it emerges as a generalizing element of probability models. Thereafter, a large part of the statistical inference is carried out according to the parameter, where it is estimated, assigned a priori distributions in Bayesian statistics, hypotheses testings are made, and it is used to compare populations and to estimate regression models, among others. For these reasons, the parameter requires its own statistical formulation. A statistical parameter is not the same as a mathematical parameter. The parameter is discussed in this paper from the epistemological point of view, seeking the characterization it has in mathematics, as well as in statistics. The parameter will be discussed in the context of the teaching of mathematics and it is expexted to be assigned a rightful place within statistical education.
