Consequently, the process of teaching and learning becomes more complex and challenging. In this direction, the creation of innovative methods of teaching that add value to the learning is needed. One of this method is active learning, either inside or outside of the classroom. Active learning is being implemented through ¿Semana i¿ (i Week) at Tecnológico de Monterrey, in which the students enroll in a real-life experience. This research work develops a smart and active learning model that develops or reinforces competences in the students. It describes the real-life experience of a group of students that do an intervention process at Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, located in the south of México during the week of September 24th to 28th of 2018. The design of this real-life experience involves three mentoring stakeholders: teachers, government, and a civil society organization. All stakeholders has one goal in common: to transform Puerto Morelos as a sustainable and smart city. With this experience, the learning process out of the classroom is very active with the students¿ participation in all project phases (planning, diagnosis, and implementation, presentation, and evaluation).
