This work focuses on the first step of developing a smart city while keeping in mind the environmental concern that has prevailed during the last years in its special touristic places. Basically, this work generates an intelligent prototype trash can, which has a built-in sensor to measure the amount of garbage that is inside it, in order to gather data that is analyzed for further decision-making with the aim of optimizing the daily routes of the public service trucks to collect the garbage. In this way, the updated databases define on real-time a complete city route map for the daily garbage recollection that displays the status of each trash can. Creating a visualization and control of the city trash cans permits to reduce the operation and gasoline costs and consequently, to diminish the CO2 emissions that garbage trucks generate by having immediately the knowledge of which trash cans need to be picked up with the least travel distance.
