- © 2021We introduce a method to analytically determine the shape of a lens's refractive surfaces for coupling two arbitrary given wavefronts. The method is based on fundamental theoretical considerations and does not assume paraxiality or numerical approximations at any time. The applicability restrictions of the technique are discussed in detail. We tested the resulting equations for many wavefronts and conditions, and always the results were as expected. Because the user arbitrarily defines both wavefronts, the system can be considered bi-directional.
