It is shown that the beam can be represented as a suitable superposition of spatially coherent modes. As soon as the beam's spatial coherence decreases, its modal content reveals the existence of transverse coherent higher order modes, with the same ellipticity. We study the dependence of the modal decomposition in terms of the ellipticity and transverse coherence length.
