© 2022During the last few years, scientists have made big efforts in the advancement of drug delivery, aiming to give superior solutions to patients. Among the different technologies available, 3D printing is gaining the attention of the industry because it represents an attractive alternative for creating customized drugs according to the specific patient's needs. It also enhances the capabilities of medicines through sustained release, combination with different active pharmaceutical ingredients, and the use of different geometries. Medicines can be administered into the human body in many different forms, such as oral (tablet, capsule, oral film, powder), topical (cream, lotion, irrigation), rectal and vaginal among others. Of these, the most common is the oral dosage form. This study presents a general overview of 3D printing applications in this context. The inclusion of 3D printing in drug delivery will revolutionize the health industry and it is important to keep abreast of the research efforts in the field. This study adds value to scientists interested in bringing new solutions to pharmaceutics.
