abstract
This article has the objective of visiting some of the journalistic exercises that go against the current in Mexico, whose narrative opposes it to the predominance of pro-government discourses, censorship, and misinformation. Based on the concept of alternative communication, as well as the analysis of some cases of digital independent media in Mexico, it offers an overview that, without being exhaustive, shows the history of journalism that is on the side of citizens, that gives voice to underrepresented communities and that is committed to social change and the respect for fundamental rights, being freedom of expression the first of them. It also makes a critical review of the challenges faced by alternatives to the mainstream media, in adverse contexts such as the Mexican. © 2023 Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
