abstract

  • A community is in a vulnerable situation when its inhabitants have at least one social deficiency in six indicators: educational lag; access to health services; access to social security; quality and spaces of the home; basic services in housing and access to food. Furthermore, if your income is insufficient to acquire the goods and services you require to satisfy your primary needs. Vulnerability is associated with inequality, which tends to weaken social cohesion and economic growth, as well as incite social tensions, instability and conflict, which affects everyone on the planet. Therefore, it is essential to act to promote common well-being. To promote prosperity in communities, the Social Innovation Laboratories have been created, at Tecnológico de Monterrey, spaces that link the university with the community, to solve real problems, through the application of innovation and technology processes. The objective is to develop disciplinary and transversal skills through interaction with inhabitants of vulnerable communities, executing actions based on engineering, chemical, and biotechnological processes and applying emerging technologies in the production of goods and services to transform these communities into sustainable ones. The results demonstrate great scope and mutual benefits: for students the increase in meaningful learning and the development of disciplinary and transversal competencies; for communities the gradual transformation towards a better quality of life on the path of sustainable development. © 2024 Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions.
