abstract
Water management is a vital concern for sustainable development, particularly in regions like the Indian subcontinent, characterized by complex river systems. This research article undertakes a comparative examination of water management policies, guidelines, and regulations between the Indian subcontinent's developing countries and the developed world. By discerning commonalities, disparities, and exemplary practices, the article seeks to inform more effective water management strategies for sustainable progress. In developed countries, intricate policy frameworks like the European Union's Water Framework Directive and the United States' Clean Water Act are scrutinized for their holistic approaches to water management. Additionally, the advanced technological tools employed for monitoring water quality, pollution abatement, and efficient water allocation are explored. The roles and responsibilities of governmental bodies, local entities, and stakeholders in water resource oversight are also examined. Conversely, developing countries within the Indian subcontinent grapple with distinctive challenges such as burgeoning populations, industrialization, and inadequate infrastructure. Initiatives promoting integrated water resource management, encompassing ecological, social, and economic facets, are investigated. The inclusivity of local communities, nongovernmental organizations, and private sectors in decision-making processes is also analyzed. A thorough comparative analysis is undertaken, encompassing equitable access to clean water, pollution mitigation, and climate change resilience. Success stories from both contexts are presented, underscoring innovative water management practices. Extracted lessons inform effective policy formulation and execution. The article underscores the importance of knowledge exchange, technology dissemination, and international cooperation to address transboundary water issues. This research underscores water management's critical significance in the Indian subcontinent and offers a comprehensive evaluation of policies, guidelines, and regulations across developed and developing nations. By comprehending the triumphs and hurdles faced by diverse countries, stakeholders can collaboratively devise more robust and sustainable water management strategies for the region's river systems. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
