© 2018 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.The production of essential oils can be affected by different factors such as genetic mutations, environmental conditions and crops management. Genomic variations can be present in multiple genetic regions, including genes or regulating expression sequences, which are involved in the production of essential oils. Moreover, these genetic variants could be related to environmental conditions that can induce a differential expression of proteins required for the synthesis of essential oils. Therefore, these genetic polymorphisms can have a further impact on the quality and quantity of these compounds and therefore, on their biological activities. The understanding of these correlations can help to identify ideal genotypes, chemotypes, and management conditions for the production of essential oils in a large scale scheme.
