  • © 2020 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.Obesity is a disease of multifactorial origin but it is well known that a sedentary lifestyle and consumption of high energy density food increase the probability to present this disease. Besides, obesity represents a risk factor for diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemias, insulin resistance, cancer, and others. Lipotoxicity or metabolic obesity refers to the alteration of adipose tissue alters disturbing the production of adipocytokines, which leads to chronic systemic inflammation that causes a disorder in its endocrine function; thus multiple tissues can present different types of lipotoxicity which are explained in detailed in this chapter. Its increased prevalence in both, developed and underdeveloped countries, is recently related not only to lifestyle and food, but also to genetic elements that can cause this metabolic disorder.
