The emergenceRegenerative understanding of place of new territorialMexico expressions in MexicoMexico, as a result of the urbanizing processes of mid-20th century modernity, dispersed the traditional dichotomy between urbanUrban-rural and rural in a transformed environmentEnvironment. Likewise, the theorization, recovered from other contexts unrelated to the reality of the country, has scarcely addressed the opportunities within strategic planningPlanning for territorial development and its impact on the natural environmentEnvironment. The study of the urban¿ruralUrban-rural demands to be approached from a systemic vision that helps to understand and adequately conceptualize its complexity, therefore, the ¿Understanding of PlacePlace¿ from a regenerative approach, becomes an appropriate methodological tool for the study of urban¿rural phenomena according to the essence and uniqueness of the placePlace, contributing to decision-making for designDesign and development within these contexts, which actively involves the inhabitants in understanding the vocation and potential of the placePlace. This article proposes the reinterpretation of the regenerative methodological tool ¿Understanding of PlacePlace¿, for the study of the Mexican urban¿ruralUrban-rural phenomenon, makes a methodological proposal for the study of the urban¿rural and presents results from a case of application. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
