abstract

  • The industry's rapid advancement towards digital environments has significantly changed workplace and educational dynamics. Industry 5.0 introduces a new focus on collaboration between humans and machines, leading to a shift towards Education 5.0. This educational approach aims to prepare future professionals for the constantly evolving job market, emphasizing the importance of digital skills, especially in communication and collaboration, for effective interaction in these environments. Education 5.0 incorporates advanced technologies like immersive environments to enhance these skills, promoting a more inclusive and personalized education that aligns with the needs of the modern digital economy. In the current scenario, teachers are experiencing significant changes and must adjust to new teaching methods. Reflective teaching is essential for teachers to adapt to these changes effectively. It involves acquiring technical skills, critically analyzing their teaching methods, and understanding how new technological tools impact student learning. Reflective teaching allows educators to question, evaluate, and adjust their didactic strategies. This ensures that emerging technologies are not used superficially but are integrated coherently and meaningfully into the curriculum. This study analyzed teachers¿ reflections at the end of a course focused on their training in immersive environments within a framework of Education 5.0. After completing the course, 26 teachers¿ reflections were collected and analyzed using a qualitative approach based on a multiple case study supported by ATLAS.ti software. The study evaluated the teachers¿ final reflections on how these technologies impacted their pedagogical practices and student learning. The research identified two main categories in the teachers¿ final reflections on implementing emerging technologies and metaverses in Education 5.0: challenges and opportunities. Among the opportunities, it was found that these technologies allow for creating more dynamic and interactive learning experiences. Additionally, immersive environments offer personalized learning tailored to individual student needs, fostering their autonomy and control over the learning process. Teachers also noted that using metaverses increases student motivation and participation, leading to greater engagement in educational activities and improved content retention. However, the teachers also reflected on the challenges of integrating these emerging technologies into their pedagogical practices, such as limited technological infrastructure and the need for continuous teacher training. In conclusion, this study underscores adopting new educational approaches and integrating emerging technologies, such as metaverses, present challenges, and opportunities, especially from the perspective of one of the key players in education: the teachers. Their role is crucial in educational transformation, as their ability to critically reflect on their practice and adapt to new technological demands will be decisive for the successful implementation of Education 5.0. While this study provides valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges perceived by teachers, the classroom implementation phase remains a crucial step in evaluating the real impact of these emerging technologies on the teaching and learning process. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.
