Prompt Engineering for the Kinematics Analysis of Mechanisms Chapter in Scopus uri icon

abstract

  • Currently, the use of Prompt Engineering has expanded to various areas of higher education, from the creation of assessment tools to the generation of code for statistical analysis. This article shares the experiences gained from using a Large Language Model (LLM) to perform kinematic analysis of rigid bodies in a Mechanism Analysis course for Mechanical Engineering students. The methodology employed is also presented, along with LLMs¿ capabilities when applied to this type of analysis. At the end of the article, the prompt engineering strategies employed are shared. Among the results, it was found that LLMs can identify mechanism diagrams and their operation; however, when performing kinematic analyses, a user familiar with the field is sometimes required to resolve ambiguities detected by the LLMs. To understand the students¿ perceptions of the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their course, a survey was administered at the end of the semester.
