Design and Educational Innovation: Development of a New Emotional Design Evaluation Methodology Chapter in Scopus uri icon

abstract

  • A key issue in the learning process of product design education is how the student can determine the best product design among a lot of feasible alternatives and how the teacher makes a more objective evaluation. In design, there are many criteria that must be considered for evaluation in product design such as usability, ergonomics, functionality, and communication. While the first three previous areas have different known assessment methodologies, the evaluation of the emotional communication of a product still has areas of opportunity. The presented methodology suggests a novel, integrated way of emotional design assessment during the conceptual design stage; implemented in an e-learning environment of a design course, where students had to apply the methodology in different design areas to see how and what their designs can communicate different emotions, build the character that represent the brand and how that communication can be controlled in the conceptual design stage. Finally, since emotions are not easy to measure because it is qualitative information, this new methodology and techniques helped to transform it as quantitative information, making possible a more precise evaluation; moreover, this method can be used as an assessment tool for distance learning and test in different learning environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
