Romero-Montero, Alejandra

Overview

Dr. Alejandra Romero Montero is a Research Professor at the School of Engineering and Sciences at Tecnológico de Monterrey and a member of the Graduate Faculty of the Ph.D. Program in Biotechnology (DBT). She earned her B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Guanajuato and both her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where she graduated with Honors. During her doctoral studies, she completed a research stay at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain). She subsequently carried out postdoctoral research at the Université de Toulouse (France) and at the Faculty of Chemistry of UNAM, further strengthening her expertise in nanomaterials, biomaterials, and advanced drug delivery systems. Her research focuses on the development of biomaterials and drug delivery systems for biomedical and environmental applications, with particular emphasis on polymeric nanoparticles, bioinspired materials, and naturally derived compounds to combat antimicrobial resistance and bacterial biofilms. She also conducts research on biosurfactants, biomass valorization, bioseparations, sustainable materials, and water treatment technologies. Dr. Romero Montero has published scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals and actively participates in collaborative research projects with national and international academic institutions, as well as industry partners. Her work integrates experimental approaches with computational tools for the design, characterization, and evaluation of functional materials. Her achievements have been recognized with several distinctions, including the CANIFARMA Technological Research Award, the BIONANO Research Excellence Award, and her appointment as a Level I member of the Mexican National System of Researchers (SNII). These recognitions reflect her commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and translating research into solutions with societal impact in health and sustainability. As an educator, she promotes project-based learning, industry collaboration, and educational innovation, fostering the development of students' skills to solve real-world challenges through the integration of science, engineering, and technological entrepreneurship. She currently supervises undergraduate and graduate research projects in the fields of biomaterials, nanotechnology, bioseparations, and applied biotechnology.
