Haptics: Adding the Sense of Touch to Feel the Magnetic Force in Undergrad Physics Courses Academic Article in Scopus uri icon

abstract

  • This contribution extends a previous paper that aimed to measure the impact of visuo-haptic simulators (VHS) in education. The students used Falcon haptic devices in the classroom with a 3D joystick that allows them to feel the force exerted on a simulated conducting wire immersed in an external magnetic field. A Pre-test/post-test approach was used with experimental and control groups (Ntotal=236), yielding a relative learning gain difference ¿ g=0.16 between the experimental group (which used the haptics) and the control group (which did not). A p-value of 0.045 for the paired sample indicates that the results are trustworthy at the 95% confidence level. A perception questionnaire administered to the experimental students shows that they consider that using the VHS enhanced their understanding of course concepts and, consequently, their problemsolving abilities. These results indicate that incorporating external stimulus through touch may increase the students' learning potential.
