abstract

  • This study presents an innovative curriculum design strategy for an interdisciplinary specialization in video games, combining Warfield's Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) with Challenge-Based Learning (CBL). The project addresses the challenge of unifying diverse domains such as art, narrative design, programming, networking, and artificial intelligence into a coherent and engaging learning path. Before implementing Warfield's method, the professors team held an initial group discussion to reflect on the overall challenge and the key elements shaping the program. This dialogue helped each faculty member understand the importance of their contribution to student learning and identify topics that would be further structured through ISM, creating a shared foundation for collaboration. Through systematic pairwise questioning, automated with Python scripts, the team generated a dependency-based map that revealed hidden prerequisites and improved interdisciplinary coherence. Preliminary results indicate that this approach improves curriculum flow, strengthens faculty collaboration, and enhances the student experience. Ultimately, the study demonstrates how the combination of ISM and CBL constitutes an innovative teaching and learning strategy with the potential to transform interdisciplinary engineering education.
