Interdisciplinary Projects for the Development of Competencies in Biotechnology Engineering Chapter in Scopus uri icon

  • Challenge-based learning is a dynamic strategy that promotes concept integration by resolving a global, high-impact problem. It encourages/fosters the development of soft skills such as leadership, critical thinking, decision-making, and social and ethical awareness. The Tec-Chihuahua team's participation in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition, a unique and innovative approach, has been the flagship project of the Biotechnology Engineering program of Tecnológico de Monterrey Campus Chihuahua since 2015. This interdisciplinary project has led to significant achievements, including one bronze medal, three consecutive gold medals, the Best Entrepreneurship Award, and Honorable Mention for Biosafety and Biosecurity. It has also profoundly impacted the development of students¿ competencies. The insight survey revealed that participating in the team helped the members acquire leadership skills, adaptability, communication, and decision-making, enhancing their performance as students and professionals and opening doors for their future academic and professional opportunities. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
