abstract

  • Taking two cacti species as source of bioinspiration and tubular metamaterials are developed and studied under torsion. A flower-like cross section and a void distribution are the two bioinspired characteristics used for the design of tubular metamaterials. The geometrical parameters that define the two bioinspired characteristics are identified. Changes in torsional stiffness due to varying these parameters are studied using finite element simulations. The shape of the tubular metamaterials cross section had a larger influence on their torsional stiffness compared to the void distribution. Results presented could serve as a guide for the design of tubular metamaterials with tuned torsional stiffness. © 2023 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
