abstract

  • Challenge based learning is an essential characteristic of the new educational model at Tecnológico de Monterrey. Courses and workshops are oriented towards the solution of worldwide challenges such as mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. The present study was performed during a one-week workshop where students are fully immersed on the solution of a particular challenge. This work is focused on the analysis of thermal energy storage devices for solar energy harvesting. Students were asked to analyze a backup system based on phase change materials. The goal was to determine the effects of energy density and heat transfer rates on the costs and amortization times of the backup system. Students were organized in teams consisting of 5 members. Each team developed a backup system and offered oral presentations at the end of the workshop. Teams presented the estimated costs, amortization times and conclusions regarding the economic viability of the project.
