Development of Sustainability Competences Using Competition-Based Learning Linked to a Challenge-Based Learning Context Chapter in Scopus uri icon

abstract

  • Sustainability competences were developed through an educational innovation project applied with bachelor¿s students at Tecnologico de Monterrey. The project aimed to strengthen students¿ ability to apply sustainability principles. It successfully applied two methodologies: contest-based learning (CBL) and challenge-based learning (ChBL). The first of these was achieved through an institutional competition that provided students with experiential support to develop proposals for climate action solutions. The second methodology that was used is applied widely for sustainability-related issues. The project was designed and implemented with a control group and an experimental group and was developed during the fall semester of 2022 and the spring semester of 2023. A bibliographical assignment to assess competence was implemented in the control group. In contrast, the students in the experimental group participated in a competition, creating a report and an individual reflection as their assignment. The results were analyzed by evaluating parametric and non-parametric tests. The students who participated in the experimental group obtained a higher score in the global evaluation of their assignments and performed better. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
