Dueñas-Moreno, Jaime

Overview

Dr. Jaime Dueñas Moreno holds a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering (Cum Laude) and a Master's degree in Environmental Engineering (Top Graduate) from the Technological University of Havana, Cuba. In 2021, he earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering Sciences (Cum Laude) from the National Polytechnic Institute of Mexico. Currently, Dr. Dueñas-Moreno serves as a postdoctoral researcher at the Water Center of Tecnológico de Monterrey. His research focuses on monitoring, occurrence, and fate of emerging contaminants and heavy metals in both surface and groundwater from regions significantly impacted by human and natural activities, such as the Valle del Mezquital, Atoyac Basin, and Meoqui-Delicias aquifers in Chihuahua, with an additional focus on the water circular economy. Additionally, he has conducted risk assessments for ecological and human health, providing local, regional, and national authorities with insights into the impacts of pollution and associated health risks at various scales during conferences, events, and forums. Dr. Dueñas-Moreno also serves as professor in the Department of Sustainable and Civil Technologies at the School of Engineering and Sciences, specifically in the Chemical Engineering program. He has actively engaged in research and teaching at different academic levels, including undergraduate, master's, and doctoral studies, taking on roles such as professor, thesis advisor, and reviewer for master's and doctoral theses. Dr. Dueñas-Moreno has coordinated sampling campaigns in collaboration with national authorities like CONAGUA and participated in consultancy projects through the Water Science and Technology Group. Among his contributions is the monitoring of wells and measurement of water quality for various companies, including Heineken. Throughout his academic career, Dr. Dueñas-Moreno has received numerous awards and scholarships in recognition of his outstanding achievements. He is currently a member of the research group "Water360" and is part of Mexico's National Researchers System (SNII Level I). He is the author and co-author of numerous articles published in high-impact journals indexed in Scopus (TOP 3% and TOP 10%). Due to the impact of his publications and his role as a reviewer for prestigious journals, since 2023, he has served as an Early Career Editor for the journal Science of the Total Environment (Elsevier, Q1, Top 10). In 2024, Dr. Dueñas-Moreno was a visiting researcher at Baylor University's Department of Environmental Sciences, collaborating with Distinguished Professor Bryan Brooks to quantify PFAS for the first time in Mexico at various stages of wastewater treatment plant. During his stay, Dr. Dueñas-Moreno received specialized training in sample pretreatment and quantification of emerging contaminants using quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), as well as training in ecological risk assessment. His main professional, academic, and research interests include monitoring, occurrence, and fate of emerging contaminants in water bodies, as well as applying biological and physicochemical technologies for the remediation of contaminated sites and assessing ecological and human health risks. Dr. Jaime Dueñas-Moreno is described as a fun and sociable person who enjoys spending time with family and friends and participating in adventurous activities.
