Dr. Flavio F. Contreras-Torres is a Research Professor at the School of Engineering and Science, Tecnológico de Monterrey (2016 present), and a core researcher in the Experimental and Molecular Medicine Unit at the Institute for Obesity Research (2022 present). Since 2019, he has led the Nano and Biostructures Research Group.
From 2012 to 2014, he served as a Research Associate at the University of Arizona, USA. His postdoctoral training also included fellowships from DGAPA-UNAM (2008 2010), ICYTDF, Mexico City (2010 2011), and CONAHCyT (2011 2012). He completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the Institute of Nuclear Sciences, UNAM (2004 2008), where his research focused on the formation of cyclic amino acid derivatives on nanosurfaces.
He is a Level II member of Mexico s National System of Researchers (SNII) under SECIHTI. Currently, he serves on the Editorial Board of Biophysica (ISSN 2673-4125) and as a peer reviewer for multiple scientific journals. His professional memberships include the American Chemical Society (ACS), the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr), the Sociedad Química de México (SQM), and the Sociedad Bioquímica Mexicana (SBM).
He has authored 69 publications, with a Scopus h-index of 19 and more than 1,040 citations, and has contributed to one patent. He has supervised two Ph.D. theses and five M.Sc. theses and mentored three postdoctoral fellows.
His current research focuses on computational medicinal chemistry in metabolic disorders, particularly the study and prioritization of molecular candidates against targets involved in metabolic regulation and mitochondrial function. His work integrates chemical-space analysis, molecular modeling, predictive methods, and the development of computational scientific applications.
